Universitary Recidences, Canteen, Servces and offices, Piazzale Aldo Moro, Turin
The scheme for the new settlement means to conjugate the attempt to converse with the important historical presences, with the necessity to offer a new structure to the university, able to create a space integrated to the city, with a system of paths that guarentees a visual and functional continuity with the current university complex places.
The project prefigure the realization of an underground car park structured on different levels, new department and university services, commercial places and support to university activities, sudents’ and professors’ residences, a nursery school.
The scheme for the university settlement in the “Piazzale Aldo Moro” can be divided in four parts:
a) the main building between “Via S. Ottavio” and “Via Verdi”.
b) the building in adherence to the “Palazzo Accorsi”.
c) the interior piazza.
d) the underground car park.
The main building, that includes the residences, the administrative offices, the catering and some commercial activities, retrieve the historical threads of Carlo Emanuele II° Barracks, that correspond to the threads of “Via S. Ottavio” and “Via Verdi”.
The inner building “is forced” to converse with the near buildings that divide it from the “Via Po”, and in particular with the two annexes (partially interrupted) of “Palazzo Accorsi” (today site of the Fondazione Accorsi). The inner courtyard created from the two new buildings become a piazza for its dimension and for its connection role. A parking takes place for three plans Under the Piazza. The accesses to the parking are placed to the limit of pedestrian area. The parking considers, in its development, the presence of the ancient buried Bastions that cross the area from West to East. The inner place is studied as a piazza, where students can study, rest, and perhaps prepare small shows or collective events. Large and long wood seats will be used by the students for their studies at open-air, trees and green will aid to refresh the public square.
The large place is organized around two main ways:
one connects the University to the inner Center of Representation, the other connects “Via Sant’Ottavio” to university library placed in the ancient glassworks.
The main buildings are protect with big, light metallic walls created to host green plants, to protect from the sun and to form a path along the building. The buildings participate actively to the life of the piazza that can also be used for night events connected to university life.
On the east side of the public square is located a two-levels glased coffe house with a terrace that expands the dehor space.
The piazza follow the natural land slope, except the dehor of the restaurant, returned horizontal for a continuity with the inside.
Little blocks in Luserna’s stone cover the whole piazza
Drinking fountains and wather games are situated toward the ancient glassworks.
